The Nemaha Central Middle School girls basketball teams challenged the Riverside Cyclones on Thursday, December 1. The eighth grade A-team’s record leading up to the game was 10-2. The seventh grade A-team’s record was an undefeated 12-0, so far in the season.

The Lady Thunder seventh grade A-team girls started the night off playing in the main gym. The first quarter flew by fast, with a close score of 6-8, with the Thunder trailing the Cyclones by 2. The girls came out in the second quarter with a lot more intensity. The Nemaha Central girls stuck with the Riverside Cyclones, still trailing by 2 at halftime, 10-12.

The Lady Thunder girls came out in the third quarter with determination and drive. At the end of the third quarter, the score was tied 19-19. With the score tied, the Nemaha Central girls were going to give it their all in the last quarter. The girls managed to pull off a spectacular win for Nemaha Central. The ending score of the victorious game was 30-28.

Playing next was the eighth grade A-team for Nemaha Central. Winning against the Cyclones the first time, they hoped to come out with another victory. Starting off quick-paced, the girls had a good lead of 6-0, ending the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Lady Thunder kicked in their offense stretching their lead to 21-0. 

Heading out from halftime, the Nemaha Central girls were confident going into the third quarter. The girls did a fantastic job of scoring seven points in the third quarter and holding the Cyclones to five points. The ending score of the third quarter was 28-5. When the fourth quarter started, the Lady Thunder knew that they had to keep the Cyclones from catching up to their score. The Lady Thunder was able to stay ahead picking up another amazing win, 32-14.

Alex Burkitt commented, “We put in a lot of effort and hard work and we got the desired result!”

Following the eighth grade A-team would be the combined seventh and eighth B-team. Right away the Nemaha Central girls jumped out on top against the Riverside Cyclones, 4-0. The girls kept up the hard work and good offense in the second quarter to end it with a score of 11-0 going into halftime.

The Lady Thunder girls went into the third quarter with great teamwork and lots of good energy to keep their lead with a score of 16-3. The girls came out in the fourth quarter with impeccable defense holding the Cyclones scoreless. At the end of the quarter, the score was 22-3 with another exciting win over the Riverside Cyclones.

Ella Sourk stated, “We fought hard and it showed when we won!”

The Nemaha Central girls had a clean sweep against the Cyclones. As the season winds down, the Thunder teams are still working hard to meet their goals.
