The Thunder’s rival, the Sabetha Bluejays, traveled to Nemaha Central's home field on Thursday, October 13. This was NC’s last game of the season with a chance to take home the Big 7 League Championship title 2 years in a row.
Sabetha deferred and NC chose to receive. The Nemaha Central Thunder had a good first return, but then later turned the ball over on downs. Sabetha looked to put points on the board early, they succeeded by a huge run to the outside to put 6 on the board. The score was now 0-6. Sabetha was stuffed on their 2-point conversion attempt. NC looked to strike back fast. They struck by driving right down the field and scoring. The Thunder scored the two-point conversion with ease making the score 8-6. On the kickoff, the Bluejays fumbled and the ball was recovered by the Thunder. The first quarter came to a close with the Thunder leading by 2.
To start the second quarter of play, NC ran a big play resulting in a huge touchdown to increase the score to 14-6. On the next kickoff, the Bluejay returner fumbled and NC had a huge recovery. On NC’s next drive, they scored but failed on the two-point conversion making the score, 20-6. On Sabetha’s next drive, they moved the ball right down the field to get a touchdown. On their two-point conversion attempt, NC stuffed them at the line making the score 20-12 going into halftime.
NC kicked off to start the second half. Sabetha drove down the field and got a huge touchdown. The Bluejays' two-point conversion was successful making the score 20-20. On NC's next drive they were stopped and turned the ball over on downs. The Bluejays gained possession of the ball, but they fumbled shortly after and NC successfully recovered the ball. The Thunder had the ball going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter of play, NC drove down the field and scored a huge touchdown putting them up 26-20. Sabetha was stopped on their next possession and turned the ball over on downs. This was huge for the Thunder. However, NC turned the ball over and Sabetha looked to score. The Bluejays failed on getting a touchdown. The Thunder ran down the clock and they successfully secured the win.
Chase Zimmerling said, “I felt excited and happy that we won.”
Caleb Hynek said, “I thought it was a hard-fought game and I enjoyed playing our rivals for my last eighth grade football game.”
The Thunder shared the Big 7 League Title with 2 teams, Jefferson West and Sabetha. The Thunder thought they played a really good game and loved that they overcame a ton of turnovers to get the win. The Thunder’s final record was 6-1 on the season.
