The seventh graders of Nemaha Central Middle School were able to participate in a field trip on Friday, October 14. They arrived at Lecompton first to watch a play called “Bleeding Kansas.” After the play, they would travel to Topeka for a tour of the State Capitol Building and a dome tour adventure.
The students arrived at school, loaded the bus, and headed out to Lecompton. The drive to Lecompton was about an hour and a half. When they arrived at Lecompton and headed off the bus, they were greeted by the employees that would help run the show. The play that they were about to watch was about whether Kansas should have been a free state or a slave state back in the day. The actors allowed the students and teachers to participate in some of the acts as well.
Dason Hill said, “ The play at Lecompton was very cool. You could see how passionate the people were about their opinion. It felt like I was actually in their time and place back then.”
Once the teachers and the students had finished watching the play, they headed to the Territorial Capital Lane Museum and Constitutional Hall. The building is still standing and holding its original structure.
After the students and teachers finished in Constitutional Hall, they headed down the road to the park to eat their lunch. Once they finished eating their lunch, they packed everything up and headed to their next stop, Topeka.
When the students arrived in Topeka, they headed for their tour of the State Capitol Building. The students headed through the doors of the Capitol Building and went through security. After the students had gone through security, they were split up into groups. Each group had an adult to lead them around the Capitol Building. As the students explored the Capitol Building, they saw the old judicial room, many statues and paintings, and the Senate Chambers. Once they all finished viewing the building, they regrouped into one big group and headed up to the dome. After they finished up with the dome tour, they all headed out of the Capitol Building, loaded the bus, and headed back to Seneca.
Clare Wullschleger said, “ It was fun but going up the stairs to get to the top was a little scary.”
The trip for the seventh graders was a fun and educational experience. They all loved the tour of the Capitol Building and the play “Bleeding Kansas.” Now all the students have a little more knowledge about the great state of Kansas.
