The Nemaha Central Middle School hosted its annual Boat Races event for the eighth graders on Wednesday, May 18. The event is used as an end-of-the-year project to send the eighth graders off on a good note in their science studies. Their goal is to build a cardboard boat that is able to float across the Seneca pool from side to side with a student paddling from inside the boat. The students were given rules and regulations for their boats, which only allowed them to use tape and cardboard.
Mr. Stueve, the middle school science teacher, guided the students throughout the project. He first informed the students of their assignment, went over the rules, and gave the groups their materials. He also explained to them the principle that involved buoyancy, the Archimedes Principle, to explain how the groups may have to design their boats.
“I really enjoyed working with my friends and decorating our boat!” said Kamryn Ranieri.
The groups finished their boats, but due to certain circumstances, the races had to be postponed a week. Aside from that however, the eighth-grade were ready to test their skills on the water.
The students were in small groups and the names of the boats were, “U.S.S Mullet'" ”Almosta Farm," “Powerpuff Gorls," "Float Felony," ”Shark Tales," “Minecraftians,” "S.S.S. Ukraine," “The Rising Sun," “The Incrediboat," “Faith," and ”RainboatNerdatron." Several boats made it across the pool, while others sank like the Titanic.
“It was a great time making the boats and I hope the school keeps doing this,” said Cameron Clary.
