The third grade at Nemaha Central Schools, on Friday, May 6, had a Pony Express Day. Some Pony Express riders came by to tell the students about the mail system in the past and helped exchange a letter between Nemaha Central and Saints Peter and Paul School. Afterward, they went to the Pony Express museum here in town.
During the first half of their day, the riders came and explained the system of the Pony Express. They showed their horses to the third graders, and also answered all of their questions on the subject. After their talk, the riders took the friendly letters that the kids wrote to SPPS students. The riders rode their horses to SPPS, exchanged the NC letters for the SPPS letters, and then they rode back giving the third graders friendly letters back from the SPPS third graders.
“It was great, I liked getting a letter back from another student,” Trey Stuke said.
After the visit with the riders, they went to the Pony Express museum here in town. When the students arrived, they were met with a guide to tell the students all about the history of the Pony Express. They were brought around to all of the antiques of the old Pony Express days.
The students were greatly informed about the Pony Express. The letters were a great hands-on experience for what the Pony Express was about.
“It was fun. I enjoyed going inside a jail cell!” Rowan Williams said.
