On Tuesday, March 8 the Nemaha Central Middle School Scholars' Bowl teams traveled to Royal Valley for their Big 7 League Tournament. The tournament was played in a round-robin style with each school competing against each other. Since it was the league meet, you are only allowed six members per team. The seventh-grade team consisted of Marin Heinen, Caleb Hynek, Alex Burkitt, Makenzie Howard, Harry Langill, and Ben Bletscher. The eighth-grade team consisted of Jack Macke, Layton Thomas, Carter Hajek, Bob Langill, Marissa Koch, and Jade Macke.
The seventh-grade went 4-3 on the day winning against Riverside 60-40, Jeff West 40-25, Sabetha 60-50, and Perry 60-55. They lost to Holton 45-60, Royal Valley 50-60, and Hiawatha 25-80. They ended up claiming fourth place in the league.
“The scholars' bowl meet was fun and even though we didn’t place first I still had a great first experience,” said Marin Heinen.
The eighth-grade went 5-2 on the day winning against Riverside 80-30, Jeff West 80-30, Royal Valley 55-30, Sabetha 95-20, and Hiawatha 90-35. They lost to Holton 55-60 and Perry-Lecompton 60-70. They were able to claim third place in the league.
Carter Hajek said, “It was a fun experience!”
In the end, the eighth grade was able to get third while the seventh grade got fourth. Overall it was a good meet for both teams that participated.
