On Tuesday, February 2, the Nemaha Central Middle School scholar’s bowl team geared up for the first meet of the season. NC has 18 eighth-grade students and 17 seventh-grade students participating in scholars bowl this season. The sponsors of the team are Mrs. Betty Peterson and Mrs. Laurie Stallbaumer. The meet took place at NC and three other teams, Royal Valley, Sabetha, and Riverside participated.
The seventh grade A-team placed third in pool play, winning to Riverside and losing to Sabetha as well as Royal Valley. Bracket play did not go much better for them as they lost to both Riverside A and Riverside B to finish in eighth place.
The seventh-grade B-team also finished third in pool play. They won against Riverside and lost to Sabetha and to the NC C-team. Overall they placed sixth in the bracket play after winning against Riverside A then losing to Riverside B.
Royal Valley did not bring a seventh-grade B-team, so NC substituted with an NC C-team. They won all three pool play matches, notably winning 110-0 against Riverside to secure first place. During the bracket play, they won their match against Royal Valley A but lost to Sabetha A to place second overall in seventh grade.
”I enjoyed competing against different teams and getting second place,” said Harry Langill.
The 8th graders had a more successful run. During pool play, the eighth grade A-team lost once, against Sabetha, and won twice, against Royal Valley and Riverside, securing first place. They won their first bracket game against Royal Valley B, but lost the second against Royal Valley A and got second place overall.
The eighth-grade B-team also got first place in pool play, winning all of their matches. They lost their first bracket match against Royal Valley A, but won the second against Royal Valley B to take third place overall.
“It was a very interesting meet, and I was proud of how my team played,” said Chariss Fritz.
Overall, the meet was very eventful. There were a variety of placements including two seconds and a third. Every team tried their best and hopes to do better in the future.
