The Nemaha Central Middle School Thunder basketball teams traveled to Perry-Lecompton on Monday, January 31. This game started the second half of the season, and 3 of the 4 teams were looking to remain undefeated on the season.
The eighth grade A-team came out ready to play and took an 18-8 lead after the first quarter. The Thunder’s offense slowed down slightly but ended the first half with a lead of 26-10. NC started the second half right where they left off ending the third quarter up 42-15. In the fourth quarter, the Thunder extended their lead again and ended the game with a 50-18 victory.
The eighth-grade B-team came out strong but was rivaled by Perry. The Thunder ended the quarter up 5-4. In the second half, NC fell behind and ended the second quarter down 7-9. The Thunder came out after halftime prepared to fight hard for the win, and ended the third quarter up 13-11. Both teams fought hard in the fourth quarter, but in the end, NC was victorious with a 19-16 win.
‘’We played with great energy throughout the game and came out on top,” said Layton Thomas.
The seventh grade A-team followed the eighth grade’s tempo and took the lead 11-4 in the first quarter. The Thunder didn't let up in the second quarter and ended the quarter up 19-9. After halftime, NC’s lead was cut in the third quarter, but they were still up 25-20. Both teams picked it up in the final quarter, and at the end of the game, the Thunder claimed the win 44-23.
The seventh-grade B-team came out ready to finish the night with a win and put up 8 points in the first quarter compared to Perry’s 2. The Thunder continued to triumph over Perry in the second quarter and was up 19-2 at halftime. Through the third quarter, the Thunder gave up some points ending the quarter, 25-10. In the fourth quarter, NC sealed the win ending the game 25-13.
“It was a hard game, but we came through and got the win,” said Carson Edelman.
At the end of the night, NC won all of their games. The Thunder team worked hard for these well-fought wins and they hope to continue to do well through the rest of the season.
