On Friday, December 17, Nemaha Central Elementary School had its accelerated reader store and movie. The Accelerated Reading program is a way to help students keep reading by getting rewards for their reading. Students read books and take tests about the book they read to earn points for their rewards. Each book has a different number of points and the points are used in the lower grades to purchase items from the store and in the upper grades to earn a movie.
Students in first grade through third grade try to get as many points as possible so that they can make multiple purchases from the Accelerated Reader store. Many of the younger students love to read the great books the library has to offer. They read and the points earned allow them to buy cool items like erasers, sports balls, snacks, movies, slinkys, and much more. Students could also earn a certificate for a personal pizza from Freddy’s Pizza Palace and an ice cream from Henry’s Deli based on their classroom goals.
“It was really fun and I liked all the stuff,” said Terry Niehues.
Students in fourth and fifth grade had several incentives to read also. They can earn a personal pizza and ice cream certificate, like the younger grades, but they can also earn a movie at the movie theater for thirty points. For additional points they have, they can use them to get snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie.
“It was fun and exciting,” said Haelyn Wahl.
For the last incentive, first through fifth graders can work hard to accumulate 100 points. Each student that reaches that goal of 100 points can go to the pizza party to celebrate their achievement. Great job to those who achieved this goal!
