The Nemaha Central Middle School Lady Thunder basketball team traveled to Sabetha to play the Bluejays on Monday, December 6, 2021. This was the second time the two teams had met and the Thunder teams were looking for victories on their last basketball outing.
The Lady Thunder eighth grade A-team started the game off with a small lead after the first quarter of 4-2. The girls fought to increase their lead and were up 12-5 at halftime. The third and fourth quarters were hard-fought quarters as the Bluejays were making a comeback. The third quarter was a rough one for the Thunder as they were outscored and their lead was cut to 4, 16-12. The fourth quarter was tight as the Bluejays scored a few to make the game intense. However, the Thunder was able to score a bucket in the fourth to claim the win 18-17.
The eighth-grade B-team game started off slow also with the Bluejays leading 2-4 after the first quarter. The Thunder team had a hot second quarter to take over the lead 12-4. After the half, the scoring slowed down, but the Thunder team was still leading after the third quarter 16-6. The last quarter was similar to the third quarter as both teams scored a few points. The Thunder team knocked off the Bluejays in their final game of the season, 19-8.
“We have definitely improved since the beginning of the season. We have definitely shown that if you set a goal, you can achieve it if you have the right mindset and motivation to work for it,” said Regan Sloop.
The Lady Thunder seventh grade A-team was looking at keeping their undefeated record going into the final game of the season. The team started off the first quarter with a strong 7-0 lead against the Bluejays. In the second quarter, the Thunder girls doubled their score and then some. The Thunder team ended the quarter with a 17-4 lead.
The third quarter was another good quarter for the Thunder team as they increased their lead. By the end of the quarter, the score was 23-6. The fourth quarter was similar as both teams added a few points to the score and the Thunder team ended the game with another victory 28-10 to have an undefeated season.
“With the hard-fought season, we finished as the Big 7 League Champions and scored 30 points a game on average and only gave up 9," said Emma Hermesch.
The seventh-grade B-team game started off slow with neither team scoring by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, there was a single score by the Lady Thunder team. The score was 2-0 at halftime with a Thunder lead.
The Thunder girls came out after halftime and scored several baskets to increase their lead. The score at the end of the third quarter was 10-3. In the final quarter, the Thunder was hot again on offense and the final score was 22-7 with another Thunder victory.
The Thunder teams swept the Bluejays for the second time of the season. It was a great way for the Thunder to end their season.
