NCMS Going in for a Lay-up.

The Nemaha Central Middle School basketball girls traveled to Hiawatha on Monday, November 1, 2021. They were determined to get a win under their belts and take home a victory. The NC girls were ready to roll, right as they stepped on the court.

First up was the eighth grade A-team and they came out ready to destroy the Red Hawks. In the first quarter, the NC girls worked really hard, and their hard work showed when they were up at the end of the quarter, 6-5. The Thunder girls were letting the Red Hawks get into their heads, as they struggled in the second quarter. The NC girls were trying to find some fire and fight back, but they couldn’t do that and at the half, they were down, 7-20.

After halftime, the NC girls played great defense and tried hard to hold the Red Hawks. At the end of the third quarter, the Red Hawks were up by fifteen, 12-27. Determined to get another win, the Thunder girls fought back hard in the fourth quarter. The fight they put up was a good one scoring 8 points while holding the Red Hawks to 3, but they still ended up trailing at the end, 20-30.

Jade Macke said, “We played really hard, but just fell short.”

Up next were the eighth-grade B-team girls and they were stretched out and ready to go. The NC girls wanted a better turnout than what the A-team girls had. In the first quarter, they were pushing themselves and it worked as they were tied at the end, 6-6. Coming out into the second quarter, NC tried stomping on the Red Hawks, but it didn’t go as planned and the Thunder team was down at the half, 7-13.

The Thunder girls came into the third quarter playing better, but couldn’t quite capture the lead finding themselves down by 5, 15-20. Determined to come out and win in the fourth quarter, they worked really hard and closed the gap a little. The Thunder team didn’t pull out the win losing a close one, 17-20.

The seventh-grade Thunder A-team came out with some steam. In the first quarter, they played tough defense and were able to tally up 5 points making the score 5-0. The NC girls were looking to come out on top at half, but their defense let up and they were down by 3 at halftime, 7-10.

The Thunder girls came into the third quarter confident they would pull through this half. The NC girls did just what they planned taking over the lead at the end of the third quarter, 13-12. The girls didn’t want to lose a nail-biter, so they worked extremely hard. Their hard work and determination led them to a victory, 18-12.

“Everybody worked their hardest, and we definitely proved that during this game,” said Teagan Lueger.

After the seventh-grade A-team victory, the B-team was pumped up and ready to crush the Red Hawks. The Thunder girls fought really hard, but couldn’t get anything to go. At the end of the first, they were down 4-6. The Thunder girls still couldn’t get anything to go in the second quarter and trailed at the half, 8-15.

The Thunder girls didn’t come out hot in the third quarter and the Red Hawks outscored them. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 12-23. Trying to make a big comeback in the fourth quarter, the Thunder girls were doing much better. The NC girls were putting a lot of effort into the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t pull through with the win, losing, 19-31.
