The Nemaha County fire department visited Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School on Tuesday, October 5, 2021. The firefighters came into the school and the fire alarm went off for them to time how fast the building was vacated. Afterward, the firemen split into groups where they talked to students in different classrooms.
The firemen talked with the students about fire drills and described what it is like to be a firefighter. They also allowed the students to ask questions about their equipment. The younger students were given a football and a coloring book. They also learned about the fire dance on how firemen get the fire off their clothes. A lot of the students were amazed by the firemen’s fire suits.
Kiara Hynek said, “It was very fun to meet the firemen."
The older elementary students practiced moving through a house with smoke by going into a bouncy house to practice getting out of a smoke-filled house. The students also practiced calling 9-1-1. The students were excited to see the firemen and their equipment and learn how to replace fire alarm batteries. The firemen taught them a lot about how to stay safe in a fire situation.
“I liked the bounce house where they taught us about kitchen safety and how to replace batteries in a fire alarm,” said Ethan Jost.
The students had a good morning with the firemen learning about fire safety. The firemen had a great time with the students and look forward to the event every year. Thank you to the firemen in this area for all you do!
