The seventh graders of Nemaha Central Middle School were able to attend a field trip on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, leaving for Lecompton, then going to Topeka. In Lecompton, the students were going to view a performance of “Bleeding Kansas” and tour a museum. The Capitol building would be the focus of the stop in Topeka.
The students headed out to Lecompton, which took near an hour and a half, or so. When they arrived, they were greeted by a few workers that would be putting on the performance. The “Bleeding Kansas” performance was a town hall meeting where settlers were trying to decide if Kansas should enter as a free or slave state. The people that were doing the act allowed the students and the teachers to participate as if they were residents of the town.
After the teachers and students had finished viewing the reenactment, they gave their farewells to the participants. The students headed to the Territorial Capital Lane Museum and Constitutional Hall, which is still standing with the original structure.
"I thought that the performance was fun because we also were able to participate in the act," said Kendra Schmitz.
After touring the museum, the students headed to the park area to eat their sack lunches. After about 30 minutes at the park, they packed up their things and went to their next stop, Topeka.
Right around 1:00 PM, the bus arrived at the Capitol Building in Topeka for the student tour of the building. Students headed through the entrance and were greeted by people inside giving them a basic introduction to the entire building. Students were divided into groups and teachers led them on the tour of the building. Students were able to see the House of Representatives and Senate Chambers, the old judicial room, view the murals and statues, and the other architectural beauty of the building. They were not allowed to go to the dome this year or walk through the library with the glass floors which were highlights of previous class trips.
The overall experience from the students’ views was that the field trip was fun and interesting. They really enjoyed the performance “Bleeding Kansas” and learned many interesting facts about the great state they live in.
"I thought the Capitol Building was very fun to learn about and thought it was pretty interesting," said Ben Bletscher.
