NCMS 8th Grade Volleyball Takes Second in the Holton Tournament

On September 26, the eighth-grade volleyball team from Nemaha Central Middle School jumped on the bus in the early morning hours ready to head to Holton to play some volleyball. Not only were they ready to play, but they were ready to win their first volleyball tournament. They were pumped with energy and excitement.

The Thunder started out strong playing Atchison. Their first game went really well and they won 25-10. In the next game, they kept playing hard and succeeded with a match win, 25-9.

The Thunder team then started getting warmed up and pumped up for their next match. The Thunder team took on Wamego in their second match hoping to get a win. The first game was close, but the Thunder girls came up a bit short, 23-25. In the next game, the Thunder girls weren't about to give up so they pushed on to get the game win with a score of 25-10. This meant that it was a split for the match since each team claimed 1 game.  There would not be a third game played in pool play of the tournament so that the pace of the matches would be similar.

After that, the Thunder team played Jeff West to finish up pool play. They started out playing great winning 25-12. Next, they kept pushing on in the second game beating Jeff West 25-11. Therefore, the Thunder girls had won two matches and had a split in the other one. The Thunder girls would move out of pool play and would have two more matches.

In the semi-finals, the Thunder team matched up with SPPS.  They had played SPPS earlier in the week and were defeated.  The team was really wanting to win this time. The Thunder girls started out really well in the first game, winning with a score of 25-18. Next, they were determined to make it to the championship match. They played really hard and beat SPPS in a close game, 26-24. The girls were super excited to move on to the championship match.

In the final game, the Thunder girls would play against Holton. The girls were excited and ready for the challenge. They started out their final game with a win, 25-16. The next game didn’t go so well as the Thunder girls sadly lost,19-25. In the last game, the Thunder team tried really hard, but couldn’t get it together losing 5-15.

Cali Honeyman said, “We played really hard all day, and played really good teams. One

of the things that kept us going strong was our defense. We were digging up balls left and right!”

The eighth-grade team tried their best and earned second place in the tournament. Holton was a solid volleyball team and the Thunder team took them to three games. Overall, it was a great day of NC volleyball!
