The Thunder hosted the Hiawatha RedHawks on their home field on Thursday, October 1, as they looked to stay undefeated. The Thunder team knew it wouldn’t be an easy game and that they would have to play to their full potential to get the win.
At the start of the first quarter, Hiawatha received the ball first after the Thunder kicked off. The RedHawks scored after a long run set them up next to the goal line. The Thunder responded quickly with a touchdown of their own. Shortly after the Thunder touchdown, the RedHawks scored again leaving the Thunder trailing 8-16. On the next possession, the Thunder had the ball and were moving down the field when they fumbled. Hiawatha recovered and the first quarter came to a close.
The second quarter started with the Thunder getting a stop and getting the ball back after the turnover. The Thunder were again making a move down the field and had just crossed midfield when they fumbled the ball. The RedHawks regained possession of the ball. After a quick stop, the Thunder was in control as they marched down the field trying to score before half. They made it down into scoring position as time was running out. The Thunder weren’t able to make it into the end zone and the second quarter ended with a score of 8-16.
The Thunder received the ball first in the third quarter and executed down the field to score, tying the game at 16 all. The RedHawks were quick to respond, scoring yet again to go back on top, 16-22. It was clear the Thunder would be in for a fight as they started their drive down the field as the quarter came to a close.
In the fourth quarter, the Thunder team was the first to score, and with the two-point conversion, they took the lead, 24-22 with about 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The RedHawks battled back driving the ball down the field and scoring to get back on top, 30-24 with 3 minutes left. The Thunder then responded by scoring a touchdown of their own, but after missing a crucial two-point conversion the game was stuck at 30-30.
The RedHawks received the ball after the Thunder touchdown and quickly put a drive together to get down the field. The Thunder’s defense tried to get a stop to send it to overtime but came up short. Hiawatha scored making the game 30-36 with under 20 seconds left. On their final drive, the Thunder team looked for Carter Hajek on a pass route but the RedHawks picked it off and ran it back for a pick-six as the clock expired, leaving the final score 30-42 with a RedHawk victory.
The Thunder team played a great game but came up just short of a victory. They dropped their record to 4-1 and look to improve before their final games.
Eli Sudbeck said, “Although we lost, we gave our best effort and I think we all wish that we could play them again.”
Kaden Peterson said, “We played our hardest and had some good drives, and if it weren’t for having three turnovers I think we would’ve come out on top.”
