The eighth graders were challenged by the Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School Parent/Teacher Organization to play the NC staff in a friendly game of basketball on Thursday, March 6. This was the 10th annual NC Bash held at the NCEMS gym.
The eighth graders started strong, with Alyssa Griffith winning the tip against her mom, Mrs. Bethany Griffith. After that, it was all downhill for the eighth grade, with the staff taking the ball and going straight to the basket for 2 points. By the end of the first quarter, the score was far apart, at 17-2, with the staff on top.
Between the first and second quarters, Mrs. Odette Helm, the school librarian, also had a challenge for the eighth graders. They had to see if they could find their stuffed animal that she had been hiding for the past week. The staff would add 10 points to their score if the students didn't find their stuffed animal. The preschool through first graders had the opportunity to shoot free throws for 2-liter pop bottles. Many students made them and everyone was ready for the game to resume.
The second quarter was slow and its challenge was for each team to gather as much money as they could in under 30 seconds. The money counted would go to that team's score. At the end of the quarter, the money was still being counted. The score of the game was 27-4.
During halftime, the second through fifth graders took shots for 2-liter bottles of pops. Many pops were disappearing after this series.
The third quarter started strangely with the announcers saying that the rest of the first half of the third quarter would be granny shots or, the ball would be shot underhanded. The second part of it was normal. The best part was when Krysten Weeldreyer got ejected from the game for throwing beach balls at the ref for a bad call. The score remained with the staff in the lead.
The fourth quarter went along nicely with both teams playing well. The money collected earlier was still being counted and you could tell it was going to affect the score by the pile of money on the table. Mrs. Nikki Honeyman finished counting the money, and the eighth grade was now at 484 and the NC staff was only at 389 points. After the score was announced, all the eighth graders stormed the court with smiles all over their faces.
Luke Ganstrom said, “It was fun to play in the game and we had good teamwork.”
Olivia Hermesch said, “It was so much fun to play a friendly game of basketball, especially against our teachers!”
Mrs. Jessica Koch said, “The NC Bash was such a great event put on by the PTO. It is always entertaining and all of the students have a great time!”
The final amount of money raised was $2,080.85. The staff and students were so happy to have raised that much money for the NCEMS PTO. Thanks to all for coming and supporting such a fun event.
