The Nemaha Central Middle School band students were excited to attend the Big East League Band performance on Wednesday, February 26. Since the Big East League formed this year, the band performance was an added event to showcase the arts in the school. This was an honors band event so only selected members attended. Attending this event, was a great opportunity for the students to socialize with their peers from other schools and to participate in the concert.
“We learned a lot of new terms, and it was fun meeting people with the same instruments,” said Aubrey Wood.
The three schools that hosted were Holton, Silver Lake, and St. Marys. The schools that attended at Holton were Atchison, Hiawatha, and Sabetha. At Silver Lake, the schools that attended were Riley County, Perry, and Nemaha Central. At St. Marys the schools that attended were Royal Valley, Jeff West, and Rossville.
There were 14 eighth graders and 16 seventh graders who attended the event from Nemaha Central. Students were organized by instrument and each section worked together to go over the music. Students rehearsed, took a short break, then rehearsed again until it was lunchtime. After lunch break, they rehearsed one more time before the concert. The concert consisted of these songs: “Excalibur,” “Aztec Dance,” “Pevensey Castle,” and “Furioso.”
“It was a great experience and we learned a lot,” said Madison Ward.
