Pie-baking fun at NCMS!

Who doesn’t love pie? On Friday, February 21, 2025, the Nemaha Central Middle School students made pie in the NCEMS cafeteria with their grandparents and grandfriends. This was part of the annual Pi Day Celebration, but due to snow days, it was decided to push all other Pi Day activities back until March 11, which is closer to the actual Pi Day.

To kick the morning off, the students were buzzing with excitement, knowing that their grandparents and grandfriends were about to make pie with them for a few hours. There were four half-hour pie-making sessions, and each student made two pies with their grandparent or grandfriend. Students could either choose from cherry or apple pie filling to make their pie with. If a student didn’t have a grandparent at the event, they were matched up with a grandfriend that they could make a pie with instead.

“Even if you have never baked a pie before, it’s very easy and fun,” said Trey Stuke, sixth grade.

There was also some extra dough, so some groups made more than two pies. The money made by selling the pies will be donated to Carol Hunninghake to help pay for medical expenses. Around 60 grandparents and grandfriends attended and joined in the Pi Day pie-baking this year.

Local grandma Betty Sudbeck commented on the tradition, “Spending time with my granddaughters making pie was amazing!”

For more of an explanation, every year, middle school students and their guests make different varieties of pie as a tribute to the similarly named mathematical symbol, pi, represented by the number 3.14. Traditionally celebrated on March 14, Pi Day (also 3/14) is a time we celebrate at Nemaha Central by making pie for the benefit of others.

“I’ve always wanted to learn how to make a pie,” said one of Betty Sudbeck’s granddaughters, Maggie Sudbeck.

Good job to everyone who showed some spirit and gratitude by simply baking pies that will be sold for a good cause. Overall, not only was baking pie rewarding for the middle school students and their grandparents, but it also made memories that will last a lifetime. Students look forward to making pie with their grandparents or grandfriends for years to come!
