NCMS Hosts the Opening Scholars' Bowl Meet

The Nemaha Central Middle School Scholars’ Bowl Team competed in the first meet of the season on Friday, February 21 at home. The teams that attended were: Riverside, Royal Valley, and Holton. This season there are 13 eighth graders and 11 seventh graders participating. The sponsors for scholars' bowl are Mrs. Betty Peterson and Mrs. Laurie Stallbaumer.

First up on the agenda was the seventh grade pool play. In pool play, there are three rounds for every team to compete in. The seventh grade A-team played Holton first and came up a little bit short, 40-50. The next match was with Riverside, who they beat with a score of 80-10.  The final team played was Royal Valley, which they won 55-30. 

The seventh grade B-team played Holton and tried hard to win, but came up short with a score of 40-60. Next up, they played Riverside and did amazing, winning with a score of 55-10. Lastly, they played the NC C-team and lost 30-80.

At this meet, there was a seventh grade C-team because Royal Valley didn’t have enough members participating in this event. The NC C-team played against Riverside first and won with a final score of 40-10. Next up, they lost to Holton 40-65.  Lastly, they matched up with the NC B-team and won the match 80-30.

“It was fun to meet new people, and we tried our hardest!” said Zoey Sudbeck.

After the seventh grade pool play, the eighth grade was up for pool play. The eighth grade A-team played Holton first and lost 20-40.  In another close match, NC lost 30-40 to Riverside.  Lastly, they matched up with Royal Valley and came up short again with a score of 60-70.

The eighth grade B-team did well in pool play winning all three rounds. The first round they played Holton winning by 10 points, 60-50.  In the next round, they defeated Riverside 70-10.  The final match in pool play was a win over Royal Valley 90-5.

After pool play every team advances to play in the tournament. The tournament consists of two rounds that determine what place you earn. Seventh grade goes first just as they did in pool play and are then followed by eighth graders. 

The seventh grade A-team played Holton B-team first and tried very hard to hold them off, but ended up losing 20-70. In the final round, they played Holton A-team and were successful winning with a score of 60-30. They placed 3rd in the seventh grade tournament and had a very good first meet.

The seventh grade B-team played Royal Valley A-team for the first round of the tournament. They did their best, but they lost by ten points, 30-40. Lastly, they played Riverside and did phenomenal winning with a score of 70-10! Overall, they placed 7th in the tournament. 

The seventh grade C-team battled the Holton A-team first, winning by 10, with a final score of 20-10. Next, they played the Holton B-team for the championship and came up a little short, with a final score, 40-80. They ended up placing 2nd in the tournament.

The eighth grade A-team played Royal Valley B-team for the first round and achieved a win with a score of  50-20. Next, they played Riverside A-team and won again, 70-40. They placed 5th in the eighth grade tournament.

The eighth grade B-team battled the Royal Valley A-team first, winning with a score of 80-30. The last round of the tournament they tried super hard to pull off a win, but they lost with a score of 50-110 to Holton A. In the eighth grade tournament, they placed 2nd.

Overall all of the teams did really well at their first meet!
