The Nemaha Central Middle School hosted a seventh grade A-Team tournament on Saturday, January 18. The teams that participated were Sts. Peter and Paul, Marysville, and Sabetha.
The first game for the Thunder team was against the SPPS Trojans. In the first quarter, the Thunder were ready for what the Trojans had up their sleeves and scored six points. Even though the Thunder defense was excellent, the Trojans still scored two points making the score 6-2 by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, things calmed down a bit with the Thunder scoring two points and the Trojans scoring three making the score at halftime 8-5.
When the Thunder came out at the start of the third quarter, they locked down the court. The Thunder scored four points while the Trojans only scored two making the score 12-7. In the fourth quarter, the Thunder played some excellent defense and the Trojans were only able to score one point. The Thunder boys scored nine and the game ended with a victory, 21-8.
The second game was against the Marysville Bulldogs. At the start of the game, the Thunder tried hard to lock the court down against Marysville. However, Marysville still scored ten points while the Thunder scored five ending the quarter, 5-10. The Thunder picked up their game in the second quarter and scored ten points while Marysville scored eight. The Thunder was trailing 15-18 at the half.
In the third quarter, Marysville had stepped up their game and scored ten points while the Thunder scored two ending the quarter at 17-28 in favor of Marysville. The final quarter was when the Thunder stepped up their game and scored eight points, but Marysville also scored eight points, ending the game at 25-36 for a Thunder loss.
“We started well but after the second half it started going downhill,” said Korbin Schmelzle after the Marysville game.
In the tournament, the Thunder played hard and gained a win on the season.
