The Nemaha Central Middle School hosted a boys’ basketball tournament on Saturday, January 18, at the NCHS gymnasium. The teams that attended were Marysville, Sts. Peter & Paul, and Sabetha. NC was scheduled to play SPPS and Marysville.
The Thunder eighth grade A-team started the morning playing SPPS. Tate Edelman tipped off against SPPS to start the game. The Thunder boys didn’t begin well, scoring only 3 points, while SPPS scored 6. The Thunder didn't have a strong defense. The Thunder team had a little more offense in the second quarter scoring 5 points, however, SPPS did also as they scored 13. Going into halftime the score was 8-19 the Thunder was trailing.
The Thunder kicked off the third quarter strong by scoring 11 points, they also improved on defense only letting SPPS score 8. The third quarter ended with a score of 19-27. The fourth quarter was low scoring for both teams as NC scored 2 and SPPS scored 4. The Thunder ended up losing their first game of the day with a score of 21-31.
Kicking off the next game, the Thunder played the Marysville Bulldogs. Both of these teams were playing really good defense. The Thunder scored 9 points, while the Bulldogs scored 8. The Thunder had a good start to the game by leading the Bulldogs 9-8. The Thunder team scored no points in the second quarter while the Bulldogs scored 14. Going into halftime the score was 9-22 with the Thunder trailing.
Beginning the third quarter, the Thunder scored 4 points while the Bulldogs scored 16. In the last quarter of the game, both teams had little offensive scoring. The Thunder added 2 points while the Bulldogs scored 1. The game ended with a Thunder loss with a score of 15-39.
Kaden Sperfslage said, “ We didn’t play our best and we also have some things to fix.”
The Thunder ended the day 0-2. The Thunder hope to improve their game and get a win soon.
