The Nemaha Central Middle School basketball boys traveled to Holton on Monday, January 13. The eighth grade team played in Holton’s Middle School gymnasium, while the seventh graders played in Holton’s Elementary School. The NC basketball teams were looking for a win after playing a few games and being unable to get one.
The eighth grade A-team was up first. In the first quarter, both teams were trying to get things going. Holton managed to score seven points while NC scored four. Then in the second quarter NC had a rough quarter and couldn’t get any shots to drop. They were also not playing the best defense. Holton had the opposite happen as everything was going their way. The score going into halftime was 6-19 with the Thunder team trailing.
The Thunder boys were looking to catch up in the third quarter and score some points. The Thunder outscored the Wildcats 7-4 and cut the Wildcats lead to ten. When NC was headed into the fourth quarter, they knew they had to play outstanding. They cut the lead to three points but couldn’t pull off the win. The final score of the game was 26-29.
Tate Edelman said, “My favorite part was when we were down by thirteen and came back and almost won!”
The eighth grade B-team was next. In the first quarter, both teams were playing neck and neck. The quarter ended with a small Thunder lead, 5-4. The second quarter was similar to the first quarter. The Wildcats managed to score one more point than the Thunder so the score going into halftime was knotted up at eight.
The third quarter wasn’t good for the Thunder. The Wildcats scored seven points to the Thunder’s three. The Thunder knowing they needed to score did just that. The only thing the Thunder didn’t do well was play good defense which caused them to lose the game, 18-23.
The seventh grade A-team looked a little shaky on offense at the start of the game, but they were playing good defense. At the end of the first quarter, the Thunder were losing by one point, 3-4. The second quarter wasn’t good for the Thunder. They didn’t play good defense and allowed the Wildcats to score nineteen points. The Thunder only got four points, and at halftime, the score was 7-23.
In the third quarter, the Thunder played better defense than in the second quarter. The Thunder only allowed four points, but couldn't get any points. The third quarter ended with the Thunder trailing 7-27. In the final quarter of the A-game, the Wildcats outscored the Thunder by three points. The Thunder lost by a score of 14-37.
Ethan Jost said, “We played good defense in most quarters and we had fun!”
The seventh grade B-team was up after the A-team. The Thunder team played good defense in the first quarter allowing only two points while scoring eight of their own. In the second quarter, the Thunder started to pull away. They had lockdown defense only letting the Wildcats score three points. The score at halftime was 14-5.
The third quarter was fabulous for the Thunder scoring eleven points, bringing their total to 25 points. The Wildcats didn’t have a good quarter, only scoring two points, bringing their score to seven points. The last quarter of the night was exactly what the Thunder wanted. They scored eight points and only allowed the Wildcats four. The Thunder played a good game and claimed the victory 33-11.
Even though only one team was victorious, the Thunder teams played some great basketball at times and are getting better as the season progresses.
