The Nemaha Central Middle School boys basketball team kicked off their season on Saturday, January 4 against St. Marys at the NCHS gymnasium. The team consists of 10 eighth graders and 15 seventh graders and is coached by Jesse Helm, Aidan Broxterman, and Jessie Macke.
The eighth grade A-team game started and both teams were trying to figure things out. The first quarter was low-scoring, with St. Marys up 2-4. The level of play picked up in the second quarter with NC scoring 6 and St. Marys scoring 7. The halftime score was 8-11 with St. Marys still in control.
The third quarter was similar to the second quarter and at the end of the quarter, the game was close with a score of 14-19. NC didn’t play well in the fourth quarter, they let St. Marys score 8 and they scored zero. The final score was 14-27 with a St. Marys victory.
“We had fun and played hard,” said Tyson Beebe-Dishong.
NC’s seventh grade had a similar start as their eighth grade, scoring only 2 in the first quarter. However, St. Marys’ seventh graders did much better by scoring 10 points. NC scored 4 in the second quarter, but St. Marys scored another 11 points. NC was trailing at halftime with a score of 6-21.
In the third quarter, Nemaha scored another 4 points but St. Marys was hot, scoring 19 points. The third quarter ended with a big St. Marys lead of 10-40. NC played better on both offense and defense in the fourth quarter with both teams scoring 7 points. The final score of the seventh grade game was 17-47 with NC taking another loss.
“It was tough, but it was our first game so we’ll keep improving,” said Grant Heinen.
Nemaha Central's seventh and eighth grade teams had a rough first game. Hopefully, they’ll power through and get a few wins in the upcoming games.
