The Nemaha Central Middle School boys wrestling team was ready for the Big East League Tournament, which was held at Nemaha Central High School on Monday, December 9. Eleven teams attended the meet: Nemaha Central, Jeff West, Sabetha, Perry-Lecompton, Royal Valley, Atchison, Silver Lake, Rossville, Saint Marys, Riley County, and Holton.
The seventh grade walked into the meet with confidence. In the 85-pound weight class, Rykeir Feldkamp was 0-2. In the 96-pound weight class, Evan Bletscher was 0-2. In the 134-pound weight class, Noah Keim was 2-2. In the 150-pound weight class, Bentin Deters was 0-2. The Thunder boys wrestled tough, but no one placed for the seventh grade.
The eighth grade wrestlers were feeling good and were ready to wrestle. In the 127-pound weight class, Elvis Pop Cucul was 2-2. In the 126-pound weight class, Jonathan Gordon was 2-2. In the 134-pound weight class, Mason Clary was 0-2. In the 141-pound weight class, Tate Edelman was 3-2. In the 215-pound weight class, Kollin Wagner was 1-2. The eighth grade did pretty well, but the Thunder did not have anyone place.
Mason Clary said, “We tried our best and we did well as a team for how small we were.”
It was good to see everyone improve throughout the season. The team is thankful for Coach Andrew Beck and Lucas Holthaus, who stepped up to help coach out. NC placed 8th as a team and had a lot of fun interacting with wrestlers from other teams throughout the season.
