NCMS Boys Thunder Challenge the Hiawatha Red Hawks

The Nemaha Central Boys Thunder Basketball team played the Hiawatha Red Hawks on Thursday, February 6. The boys had already played Hiawatha once this year and were looking forward to playing them again. The Thunder teams were hoping to get some more wins under their belt. Game night was also Team Schnak night as the boys wore shirts to spread the word of the symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes.

The first game was the eighth grade A-team. The Thunder team started off well, scoring 13 points and only letting the Red Hawks score 4. In the second quarter, the Thunder team had scored another 13 points and the Red Hawks had only scored 5. The Thunder team had a solid lead, 26-9.

After halftime, the Thunder team had scored another 8 points and didn’t let the Red Hawks score a single point. In the final quarter, The Thunder team had scored another 8 points and the Red Hawks had only scored 5. The Thunder team had another amazing win with a score of 42-14.

“It was good being able to see our team play well together,” said Carter Rottinghaus.

Next up was the eighth grade B-team. The game started off well for the Thunder team with a score of 7-5. In the second quarter, the Thunder team had bumped their score up to 17 and the Red Hawks only had 6 points.

The Thunder team scored another 12 points and Hiawatha scored 9 points in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Thunder team had scored another 11 points and the Red Hawks had done the same. In the end, the score was 40-26, another win for the Thunder.

The seventh grade A-team started the first quarter off strong with a score of 11-4. In the next quarter, they let the Red Hawks score 15 points and the Thunder team only scored 7. The Thunder was down by a point at halftime.

In the next half, the Thunder team had made up for their last quarter. They scored 12 points while Hiawatha only scored 6. In the final quarter, the Thunder team held onto their lead by scoring 8 points even though the Red Hawks scored 12. The final score was 38-37, another win for the Thunder. The seventh grade A-team should feel great about the win since the last meeting with Hiawatha was a 15 point loss.

“It was a very close and exciting game to play in,” said Abram Keim.

The final game was the seventh grade B-team. The Thunder had not started off well only scoring two points and letting the Red Hawks score 7 points. The next quarter did not go so well either.  The Thunder was held scoreless, while Hiawatha scored 8 points.

In the second half, the Thunder team did a lot better. The Thunder lifted their score by 4 points and didn’t let the Red Hawks score a single point in the third quarter. The Thunder team played hard and tried to capture the lead by scoring 8 points, but Hiawatha hung on by scoring 2. The final score was 17-14, a close loss for the Thunder.

All of the Thunder teams played some great basketball, but unfortunately, one team lost a close game. All of the Thunder teams are looking forward to their next game.
