The Nemaha Central Middle School basketball team traveled to Hiawatha on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The seventh and eighth grade teams played an A and B-team games. Eighth grade played in the middle school and seventh played in the high school.

The NC eighth grade A-team athletes ran up and down the court scoring 8 points in the first quarter.  However, Hiawatha scored 10 points to take the lead. The Thunder team was behind by 2 points but still had three quarters to go. In the second quarter, NC’s offense and defense slowed down a bit and at halftime, the score was 13-19.

The Thunder came back from halftime, ready to play the second half. They kept playing aggressively in the third quarter and it ended 23-28 with the Thunder still trailing. In the fourth quarter, the Red Hawks outscored the Thunder for the win with a score of 31-38.

Eighth grader, Olivia Hermesch commented, “We did good but we could have done better.”

As the A-team game finished up, the eighth grade B-team was getting ready to play a 2 quarter game. The athletes hustled back and forth on the court and by the end of the first quarter, NC was down quite a bit with a score of 4-12. The Thunder team didn’t score in the second quarter while Hiawatha doubled their score.  The game ended with the Thunder team losing, 4-24.

The NC seventh grade A-team was ready to play basketball at the high school. In the first quarter, the Thunder was in the lead with a score of 6-1. After they had a pep talk for a minute, they sprinted out to the court ready for the next quarter.  The Thunder took charge in the second quarter and it came to an end with a score of 14-3.

NC had a considerable lead after halftime and extended it into the third quarter. The third quarter was another good one for the Thunder and it ended  20-5. The Thunder finished up the fourth quarter with a win, 24-7.

After the A-team walked off, the seventh grade B-team was ready to start the 2 quarter game. The B-team hustled back and forth and then the first quarter came to a low scoring end, 0-2. NC was outscored by 2 points but they still had one more quarter to go. The second quarter was tough and the Thunder ended up losing the game with a score of 4-8.

“We all worked hard and played really good,” said Nikki Lambrecht, seventh grade.

The Nemaha Central basketball team may not have won all their games, but they are learning how to improve and hope to be playing their best basketball by tournament time.
