Emmie Getting the Ball

The Nemaha Central Middle School basketball team traveled to Holton on Thursday, November 7, 2024. This was the seventh grade’s first away game this season. The seventh and eighth grade teams played an A and B-team game.

The NC eighth grade athletes worked hard in the first quarter outscoring their opponents 10-0. They were in the lead but they still had three quarters to go. In the second quarter, the Thunder offense slowed down a bit, and at halftime, the score was 13-4.

The Thunder came back from halftime, ready to play the second half. They kept the lead in the third quarter, 17-6. The Wildcats kicked up their offense in the fourth quarter to make it a close game.  The Thunder was able to hang on and get the win, 22-18.

As the A-team game finished, the eighth grade B-team hopped onto the court for their turn. The B-team only played two quarters since NC was short of players. The athletes hustled back and forth on the court and by the end of the first quarter, NC was leading, 6-2. The Thunder team stayed hot in the second quarter and the game ended with a 12-2 win for the Thunder.

Alyvia Sudbeck said, “We did good and played great defense. I’m proud of how it turned out.”

The NC seventh grade A-team was ready to play basketball. Both teams were playing well in the first quarter as it ended in a 6-6 tie. After they had a pep talk for a minute, they sprinted out to the court. The second quarter did not go as well for the Thunder as they fell behind 10-15.

NC spent halftime trying to figure out what needed to change in the second half. The third quarter was about evenly paced and the Thunder was still trailing 18-23. After the coach made a plan for the fourth quarter, the team fought hard to take the lead and win with a score of 32-28.

After the A-team walked off, the seventh grade B-team was ready to start the game. The B-team hustled back and forth and then the first quarter came to an end with NC trailing 3-5. The second quarter went well for the Thunder as they took the lead back, 11-6. The Thunder was ahead but they still had half of a game to go.

After halftime, they came back to start the third quarter. The third quarter went well as the Thunder team managed to keep the lead with a score of 17-10. The Wildcats were making a comeback in the fourth quarter and with about 10 seconds left, Holton dribbled down the court. They tried to score but NC’s defense stopped them to get the win 19-18.

Brooklyn Korber commented, “The game was exciting. Our team pulled through at the end of it and won.”

NC had a great night with all teams bringing home a win. The girls were super excited to have swept Holton this season.
