NC player dribbling past the defense

The Nemaha Central Middle School girls basketball team was looking forward to their second home basketball game of the season. They competed against the Silver Lake Eagles on Monday, November 4, 2024.

The NC A-team was short a player coming into the game. They were missing their point guard so they knew it was going to be a huge factor in the game. The first quarter started with Silver Lake winning the tip-off. After a few changes of possession, the Eagles were in the lead. The first quarter ended with Silver Lake outscoring the Thunder, 2-16. The second quarter went a little better for the Thunder as the team started to make some shots. The second quarter ended 11-31 with Silver Lake still in the lead.

While the first half was rough, each team only scored 5 points in the third quarter. The quarter came to a close with NC still behind, 16-36. Both teams made a few more shots in the last quarter, but the Eagles cruised to a victory. The final score of the game was 22-44.

Olivia Hermesch said, “It was a tough game and we tried our best. It was hard because we were missing our point guard.”

NC’s eighth grade B-team was up next and the plan was to only play two quarters. The first quarter was challenging and NC found themselves down 2-9. NC could not get their offense to go in the second quarter while the Eagles went on a scoring streak. The final score of the two quarter game was 2-21 with an Eagle win.

While the eighth grade A-team was playing, the seventh grade also had their A-team competing. NC didn’t have a great start in the first quarter as Silver Lake kept them scoreless, 0-6. The second quarter went a little better and NC made some shots to make the halftime score 4-12 Silver Lake.

The Thunder team hoped the third quarter would go better. However, they were outscored giving the Eagles a bigger lead, 7-18. NC couldn’t pull much closer in the fourth quarter as the game ended with a final score of 10-25.

The Thunder’s seventh grade B-team was up next. The first quarter started well for NC, as they were leading with a score of 10-5. The second quarter also was picking up for the Thunder and Silver Lake was falling behind. The halftime score was 21-10 with a Thunder lead.

The second half of the game was going great. The score at the end of the third quarter was 33-13. The Thunder had picked up their energy and with the eighth graders cheering them on, the fourth quarter was intense. The final score was 36-21, the first win of the night for NC.

Audrey Sudbeck commented, “It was really fun and I had a good time playing with my teammates. In the end, we won!”

It was a tough evening for the Thunder but they pulled one win away from the Eagles. This was the third game of the girls basketball season so they have plenty of time to improve.
