The Nemaha Central Middle School eighth grade basketball team ventured to Atchison, ready for their first away game of the season on Thursday, October 31, 2024. The girls were excited and prepared to face Atchison. The seventh grade NC team did not attend because Atchison lacked players. Therefore, the NC eighth grade A-team competed against their top team, a mixture of seventh and eighth graders. The NC B-team played against their remaining seventh graders.
The NC girls stepped on the court, and Alyssa Griffith started with the jump ball for NC. The game started very competitively with both teams scoring several baskets. However, the Thunder team trailed at the end of the first quarter, 6-10. The scoring continued into the second quarter, with Atchison keeping the lead, 13-19.
The second half began with NC in possession. The NC team held their own in the third quarter and by the end the score was 23-28 with NC trailing. The final quarter began and the NC girls tried to keep the score close. They played better in the quarter but still lost with a score of 27-34.
Piper Hiltgen said, “We fought well throughout the game and played pretty well, but we could’ve played a little better.”
The NC B-team stepped on the court, hoping to take home a win. The B-team was only half of a game with NC having the first possession. The first quarter went well for the Thunder as they took the lead in the first quarter with a score of 6-0. The second quarter began and the girls played well and kept the lead. The game ended with a final score of 10-4.
The Thunder team played well and they were proud of the way the game turned out. They are ready to face their next opponent.
