The Seneca Fire Department visited Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, for their annual visit. During the visit, the students practice fire drill procedures and listen to the firemen talk to them about fire safety.
In the kindergarten and preschool classrooms, the firemen spoke about how they are always there to help and not to be scared of them while in the fire suits. They also talked about how the equipment works and protects them from fire. The first and second grade students discussed with the firemen how fires are started and how to prevent them. The students received a gift bag containing a coloring book, crayons, and a water bottle.
“My favorite part was getting the packets at the end,” said Stratton Heinen, a second grader.
The third and fourth grade classes met in the gym and practiced a real house fire drill by maneuvering around the inflatable house. Students were also taught how to extinguish fires in the kitchen by throwing flour on a grease fire. The firemen showed them how to stay out of the smoke by staying low to the ground and feeling the door handles by the back of their hands. In the music room, the fifth grade students learned how to compose a call to 9-1-1.
“It was fun. I liked how they talked about how to save yourself in a fire,” said Kelsey Weber, a fourth grader.
Overall, the students learned a lot about staying safe in case of a fire. These are important lessons they will use for the rest of their lives.
