Officer Helm with the kindergarten and first graders.

The first ever Careers at School event took place on Wednesday, September 11, at Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School. The kindergarten and first grade classes met in the gym as they excitedly waited for the speakers to arrive. Mrs. TerriLynn Haverkamp, the school nurse, Mr. Mark Bergman, the school janitor, and Officer Todd Helm, school resource officer, were the guest speakers of the event. Each guest speaker talked about their role at the school.

Mrs. Haverkamp was the first speaker, talking about what she does as a nurse. She spoke about what to do if you don't feel good at school and how she is always there to help. She also spoke on washing your hands and using hand sanitizer to keep away germs and prevent sickness.

“I like the nurse and I'm supposed to go to her office if I don't feel good,” said Karmen Koch, a kindergartener.

The second speaker was Mr. Bergman, the school janitor. He talked about what messes he cleans on a daily basis. He also said he hates cleaning up messes from sick students so he tied that back to what Mrs. Haverkamp said before about saying something if you don't feel well.

Officer Helm talked about how he keeps the school safe and that you should not talk to strangers. He had the students practice yelling “Get Away!” and “Stranger Danger! so they knew what to do if a stranger was trying to talk to them.

“It was fun and my favorite person was the police officer,” said Henry Baker, a first grader.

Overall the students enjoyed having the opportunity to learn more about the jobs of the people they see every day at school.
