The Nemaha Central Middle School football team took on the heat against the Hiawatha Red Hawks on Thursday, September 19. Despite the 90 degree weather, the NCMS Thunder football team brought their game to their home field.
The game was underway and it took the Thunder a little while to get going. With four minutes left to go in the first quarter, NCMS scored their first touchdown by running one into the end zone. After the touchdown, NCMS ran in a two-point conversion. The score at the end of the first quarter was 8-0 in favor of the Thunder.
In the second quarter, NCMS threw a long pass for another Thunder touchdown. NCMS ran in a two-point conversion after the touchdown making the score 16-0. Hiawatha had the ball after the kick and made their way down the field. Hiawatha’s running back happened to slip his way through the Thunder defense running for a long Hiawatha touchdown. At the half, NCMS was still in the lead, but now the score was 16-6.
In the third quarter, NCMS scored two more touchdowns making the new score 28-6. NCMS did not convert on either of the extra point attempts. Towards the end of the third quarter, Hiawatha fumbled a snap, and it was picked up by NCMS. The ball was recovered for another Thunder touchdown. NCMS ran in the two-point conversion to make the score at the end of the third quarter, 36-6.
The fourth quarter came around and NCMS was feeling very confident about the game. Towards the end of the fourth quarter, NCMS put in their second-string offense. They managed to score another Thunder touchdown. NCMS had no luck on the two-point conversion, making the score 42-6. With five minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Hiawatha ran for a long touchdown. Hiawatha ran in a two-point conversion making the final score 42-14 at the end of regulation. With the NCMS Thunder team claiming the win, they continued the tradition of ringing the victory bell.
The Thunder is 3-0 on the season and looks forward to competing against Sabetha. It will be a battle of undefeated teams.
“After a while, we started to communicate and that’s when we played our best as a team,” said Carter Rottinghaus.
“Our team worked well together,” said Ayden New.
