The 4th grade students at NCEMS enjoyed a field trip to Havensville Living History Day on Friday, September 15, 2023. The theme of this year's Havensville Living History Day was, "Weathering The Storms" of Kansas. The kids enjoyed watching presentations about life on the prairie and engaging in hands-on activities.
The 4th Graders enjoyed indoor hands-on activities including floor loom weaving, lye
soap making, rug making, crocheting, coffee grinding, butter churning, and crafting. In the butter
churning exhibit, the students got to hand-churn butter and then eat it on crackers.
After the students finished the indoor exhibits they headed upstairs to watch multiple
presentations including Prairie Weather Predictions where the students played a true or false
game in which they identified whether a weather myth was true or not. The other presentation
they watched was Story Time with Author Rosie Bosse, where Rosie read the 4th Graders her
book, Curly and the Terrible Tornado. After her book reading she gave away a free copy of her
book to one lucky winner, which was Sarah, from Mrs. Olberding’s Class.
When the 4th graders finished watching the presentations they went outside to the
outdoor exhibits. The most popular exhibit at Havensville Living History Day is candle making
where you get to make your own hand-dipped candle to take home. Some other outdoor
exhibits included a chores station, an outhouse, a laundry station, Will Warner, the blacksmith,
frontier cooking, and more.
"I really liked watching the blacksmith get metal hot and hit it with a hammer to shape it
and let it cool. It was my favorite thing to see that day," said 4th Grader Evan Ross.
"I liked making the candles by dipping a wick in melted wax. I also really liked watching
the blacksmith make things out of metal," said 4th Grader Isabelle Bletscher.
The 4th Graders ended the day with lunch and headed back on the bus to go home.
Overall, it was a great trip to Havensville.
