The Nemaha Central Middle School students participated in the annual Career Fair on Wednesday, April 19. The Career Fair is a great educational opportunity with business people from around the area coming to talk about their careers over the years. Also, students from the high school came to educate the students on career pathways offered at the high school. The Career Fair was organized by the counselors, Sheriden Haverkamp and Sarah Renyer.
The Career Fair kicked off with everyone going to the gym to hear from the keynote speaker. The main speaker was Stephanie Haverkamp from United Bank and Trust and she talked about the 10 soft skills of getting a job. Once she finished talking about the 10 soft skills, the students headed to different rooms to hear about different careers.
Travis Stallbaumer was one of the speakers and he talked about his everyday life being a pharmacist. He started by describing what a normal day for him looks like. Then, he talked about all the different parts of his job and the schooling it took to become a pharmacist. He finished up by discussing several different types of pharmacy careers.
Betsy Macke was another guest speaker and she talked about her career at Koch and Company. She talked about how she found her job and what her duties are as a human resources manager. She also discussed the different opportunities at Koch and Company. Another thing she mentioned is how much Koch and Company have expanded since they first started.
Stephanie Haverkamp talked about her career at United Bank and Trust. She discussed how important it is to protect your information from identity fraud. Another topic of conversation was loans and what you need to have to get a loan. She ended it all off by going around the room asking us about what we wanted to be and giving us great advice about schooling.
Will Deters said, “The Career Fair was interesting and fun to learn about careers.”
Lastly, several high school students talked about different career paths and clubs the high school has to offer. Some of the career paths and clubs the high school has are engineering, mechanics, FBLA, FFA, yearbook, and FACs.
“It was very interesting to explore different types of jobs and pathways in high school,” said Emma Hermesch.
Overall the Career Fair was a great experience for students to get ideas about their future. They had the opportunity to hear about high school programs and several careers from local business people.
