Eighth grade scholars bowl members stand for a picture

A great scholars bowl meet was held at Nemaha Central Middle School on Thursday, February 23. The competition, where students answer questions asked to them, is the second of the season. The schools competing against the NC teams were Riverside, Holton, and Hiawatha.

 The eighth grade A-team came out with two out of three wins in pool play. The team started out pool play with a loss of 30-40 to Riverside A, a win of 80-45 to Hiawatha A, and another win of 50-40 to Holton A. In bracket play NC A was able to secure two wins, a 50-40 win to NC B, and a 60-20 win to Holton B, giving NC A the first place title.

“It was fun to go to,” said Maggie Jones.

The eighth grade B-team did not have as much success only getting one win, and two losses in pool play. The team had a 35-50 loss to Riverside B, an 80-40 win to Hiawatha B, and a 40-50 loss to Holton B. During bracket play, the team finished with two losses and a fourth place finish. The results were a 40-50 loss to NC A, and a 30-50 loss to Holton A.

The seventh grade A-team finished in fifth place overall. The team had two losses and one win in pool play. The scores of those matches were an 80-40 win to Riverside A, a 60-90 loss to Hiawatha A, and a 5-60 loss to Holton A. The bracket play went much better than pool play, with a 90-10 win over Riverside B, and a 60-20 win over Riverside A.

The seventh grade B-team finished in seventh place. The team had earned one win and two losses in pool play. The team finished with a 60-30 win to Riverside B, a 40-110 loss to Hiawatha B, and a 10-60 loss to Holton B. Bracket play was tough also with a 10-40 loss to Riverside A, and a 40-30 win to Riverside B. 

“We focused and popped off some answers,” said Camden Scism.

The students had a great meet with good sportsmanship from everybody. The students did great and one team even finished in first place. Overall it was a fun and educational time for the scholarly students.
